Religious Tradition or Child Abuse?

I read this article this morning and was deeply disturbed:

The article tells of a 3-year-old Nepalese girl who has been chosen as a living goddess. This means she will be worshipped as the reincarnation of a Nepalese diety. The problem is that she has been taken from her family and will live in near isolation in an ancient temple until she reaches puberty.

My intention is not to disrespect the religious beliefs of Hindus in Nepal, but my heart breaks for this child. The details revealed in this article are nothing short of astonishing. I realize that each culture is unique and that there are things others will not understand, but this seems so unfair to the child. I urge you to read it and form your own opinions.
